Statement From New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald On World Brain Day

ALBANY, N.Y. (July 22, 2024) – "While the summer months are perfect for staying active and improving your health with outdoor activities, it is just as important to work on brain health, as we recognize World Brain Day on July 22.

"This year's theme, Brain Health and Prevention, highlights the importance of healthy behaviors in preventing brain diseases.

"There are a number of activities to help you maintain a healthy brain and possibly lower your risk of cognitive decline and other disease. Challenge your brain with activities such as reading, playing word games and taking part in hobbies that engage and stimulate to help your brain stay sharp and focused.

"Other steps to incorporate as part of daily habits to promote brain and overall health include:

  1. Taking part in regular exercise that raises your heart rate and increases blood flow to the brain and body, such as simple activities like walking for 30 minutes a day.
  2. Protecting your head from injury, including wearing a seat belt when in a vehicle or a helmet when riding a bike.

  3. Quitting or not starting smoking. Resources to help you quit are available at https://www.nysmokefree.com/.
  4. Eating a well-rounded diet that includes whole grains, plant-based foods, fish and healthy fats. Decreasing your consumption of processed foods and salt also plays an important role in brain health.
  5. Taking steps to lower high blood pressure and manage diabetes.
  6. Trying to get a good, restful night's sleep and if you are experiencing sleep-related difficulties, talk to a health care provider.

"Finally, I encourage you to make a point of protecting your brain to safeguard your future. You can find brain health resources on our website: health.ny.gov/diseases/conditions/dementia/brain_health.htm."
