Interventions:

  • Increasing referrals to NYS Quitline
  • Fax-to-Quit Policy; Opt-to-Quit Policy; smoke free campus - Oneida County government buildings
  • Provide structured, comprehensive breastfeeding education and professional lactation counseling and support during pregnancy, in the hospital and after delivery
  • Link pregnant or postpartum low-income women to local WIC services for breastfeeding and other nutritional supports
  • Employers' breastfeeding policies; community lactation lounges; breastfeeding cafes - educational; increase OB/GYN referrals; hospital support of Great Beginnings

  • Promote tobacco use cessation, especially among low SES populations and those with poor mental health
  • Increase the proportion of NYS babies who are breastfed

Interventions:

  • Promoting Tri-County Quits Smoking Cessation Program
  • Develop and distribute communication tools to local media about dangers of tobacco use
  • Collaborating partners meet quarterly to review progress, gather feedback and make suggestions to improve the process
  • Promoting NYS Smokers' Quitline
  • Implement maternity care practices consistent with the World Health Organization's Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and increase the number of Baby Friendly Hospitals in NYS
  • Link pregnant or postpartum low-income women to local WIC services for breastfeeding and other nutritional supports
  • Coordinate and implement Breastfeeding Conference to promote baby-friendly policies and increase exclusive breastfeeding
  • Communicate availability of private rooms at hospital for women to breastfeed infants or pump breast milk
  • Provide structured, comprehensive breastfeeding education and professional lactation counseling and support during pregnancy, in the hospital and at home

  • To increase cessation, the hospital will promote the Fax-to-Quit and Opt-to-Quit referral processes using a variety of methods, including training a respiratory therapist to become a tobacco cessation counselor, encouraging use of EMRs
  • Promoting NYS Smokers' Quitline
  • Promoting of policies and practices in support of breastfeeding
