How to Use the Nurse Aide Registry

Federal and State regulations [42 CFR 483.75(e)(5) and 10 NYCRR 415.13(c)(2)(i)] require nursing homes to verify each nurse aide's certification status, as well as the status of all potential staff, with the state's Nurse Aide Registry prior to employment or use in the facility.

The New York State Nurse Aide Registry is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 1-800-918-8818. The New York State Nurse Aide Registry may be used by anyone, not just health care providers. The interactive voice response (IVR) registry will provide you with verbal and written verification of the individual's registry status. To use the IVR Registry, the caller must have the nurse aide's New York State Nurse Aide Certification number [NA123456789123X] to seek verification. The IVR system will guide the caller through the verification process. Verifications may also be made on-line at https://registry.prometric.com/registry/public. On-line verifications may be done by New York State Nurse Aide Certification number or by name.

Federal and State statute and regulations require that the names of all individuals who have been determined competent by New York State as nursing home [residential health care facility] nurse aides, be listed in the State's Nurse Aide Registry. The Registry also contains information regarding the criminal conviction of a nurse aide by a court of law and/or a finding, sustained upon investigation under Public Health Law § 2803-d, for any resident abuse, neglect, mistreatment or misappropriation of resident property occurring in a nursing home on or after October 1, 1990. New information is added and the Registry is updated daily.

Federal and State regulations prohibit nursing homes from employing or using any individual, in any capacity, who has been convicted of or has a documented finding of resident abuse, neglect, mistreatment or misappropriation of resident property listed in the nurse aide registry. These requirements further require nursing homes to verify each individual's certification status prior to employment or use in the facility.
