In January 2020, the first case of COVID-19 was reported in NYS. By March of that year, the entire Rockland County Health Department (RCHD) began transitioning to meet the demands of the developing pandemic. All staff commenced juggling program responsibilities with COVID-19-specific and related duties. RCHD developed an Incident Command Structure to optimally utilize all available resources and activated their Call Center to answer questions from the public. Hard hit by the virus, RCHD Administration focused on myriad personnel and fiscal impacts, as well as obtaining scarce supplies (masks, PPE, etc.). Soon, handling the surge of cases and test results became the priority. All RCHD employees were trained in case investigation and education of the public. Some public health programs (inspections, environmental health and TB home visiting,) were forced to pause regular duties, while other programs (all clinics and child services) were able to change how their critical services were provided. Throughout the pandemic, RCHD staff remained committed participating in NYS task forces and balancing delivery of routine public health services with ever-changing virus mandates. By 2021, availability of COVID-19 vaccines ushered in Point of Dispensing (POD) and vaccination operations which now extend to all individuals over 6-months of age. Throughout each phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, the RCHD was able to adapt to the plethora of novel circumstances, guidance, and mandates. Currently, the expanded COVID-19 Vaccine Program is held simultaneously with influenza vaccine administration and RCHD staff are able to provide essential public health services across all programs. The RCHD Wall of Fame honors every staff member for his/her tireless dedication to the ultimate eradication of COVID-19.
