On June 3, 2008 the excise tax on cigarettes in New York State increased by $1.25, raising the average cost per pack to approximately $7 ($9 in New York City). The experience of other states indicates that when cigarette taxed go up, smoking goes down. The increased price of cigarettes in New York State is expected to motivate 140,000 smokers to quit for good.
