  1. Chenango County Public Health Department nursing staff cross-train with Chenango County.
  2. Public health nurses serve as back-up for mental health nurses for medication administration and make referrals as appropriate to Chenango County Community Services for its Mental Health and Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services.

  2. Install computer programs and gain access for community partners to share information and input data on patients. Oneida County Department of Mental Health is researching grant funding for an electronic medical record for this purpose.
  3. Research NYS guidelines to learn if medications may be adjusted for patients with developmental disabilities or mental health problems.

  2. Conduct a public health campaign about the risk factors associated with binge drinking. Include information about prescription drugs.
  3. Provide a CME training for primary care physicians, surgeons, and mid-level practitioners about brief screenings and a referral process for substance abuse, mainly for alcohol, but the screening can be adapted for other substances such as prescription drugs. Invite area physicians and mid-level practitioners who practice outside of Fox and Bassett hospitals.
  4. Provide a list of resources and referral agencies to healthcare providers, including a list of user-friendly online links to The Parent Handybook, LEAF, OFO, CDC, the Otsego County Health Department, and other relevant sites.

Putnam Putnam Hospital Center    
  1. Putnam County Department of Health has been actively involved in two coalitions regarding mental health/substance abuse, particularly in the area of health education.
  2. Health education staff have participated in the development of media campaigns to promote awareness around the problems of binge drinking as well as over-the-counter drug abuse.
  3. Activities for 2009/2010 include:
    • Participate in the Communities that Care Coalition.
    • Contact media campaigns on the problems related to binge drinking and the abuse of over-the-counter drugs.
    • Participate in Putnam County Alcohol and Drug Task Force to promote dangers of binge drinking and awareness of host liability laws.

Suicide
  1. Participate in and provide administrative support for the county’s Adolescent Suicide Prevention Task Force. A cluster of adolescent suicides occurring in late 2008 resulted in the formation of a multidisciplinary task force comprised of school, DSS, Probation, and Mental Health providers, as well as Public Health Services representatives.
  2. Share information about high risk issues, gang-related involvement and other risk situations for the adolescents identified as being part of the vulnerable population.
